Criminal & Professional Discipline

Lawrence Gridin’s practice is dedicated to criminal defence, professional regulation, and police discipline.

Prior to launching his own firm, he practiced for 13 years as a partner at a premier Toronto litigation boutique.

Lawrence provides counsel during criminal and misconduct investigations, trials, and appeals. His representation spans all stages of the criminal process and extends to accused persons, victims, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel. He has represented clients before all levels of court in Ontario, and has argued before the Supreme Court of Canada.

A substantial focus of his practice is the defense of police officers facing criminal charges and disciplinary action. He has represented hundreds of officers in police oversight investigations, proceedings before disciplinary tribunals, proceedings before the courts, and in Coroner's Inquests. He manages matters ranging from highly discreet internal investigations to complex, widely publicized litigation, including acting as counsel in the only two cases where Toronto Police officers were charged with murder in the line of duty.

Recognized for his expertise in police oversight, he routinely advises institutional clients and law enforcement agencies on regulatory compliance, policy development, and internal investigations. Successive Ontario governments have consulted him on the drafting of policing legislation and regulations, including the Community Safety and Policing Act.

Lawrence is a frequent speaker at conferences. He regularly lectures at professional development courses and academic programs, including the LL.M. program at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Before joining the Ombudsman’s office, Lauren practiced municipal and land use planning law at Aird & Berlis LLP, where she advised clients on all aspects of the land use planning and development process.
